Sassy N Stylin’: Cropped Sequin Blazer

I love easy and breezy fashion. Finding that one piece that puts it all together without it looking like you were trying too hard. That stylish accessibility that makes it look like anybody could pull together such a fabulous frock. That really is when you know you have made it in the fashion world…

This Bebe cropped sequin blazer is that item. The “piece de resistance” that you will reach for over and over because well, it just seems to go with everything! How much do we (by we I mean my very stylish audience) love those pieces?!? This sassy blazer seems to make it all come together so effortlessly. Over a black t-shirt, over a dress, with a high waisted shirt, it just seems to work.

Just as this lovely model is showing up, you have a few options for styling. You can choose a longer layering item for under your new, awesome cropped sequin blazer OR you can choose a higher waisted bottom piece (pants or skirt) to meet the bottom of the blazer. The only in between is a one-piece jumper dress. The greatest thing about this item is that it is fancy and casual at the same time! This gives you the option to style it up or down depending on your destination. The sequin is that little bit of sass that makes your entire ensemble pop. Cropped layering pieces fill a void in your wardrobe… Anything that is empire style or cut at the waist needs a layering item that mimics this silhouette. Cropped pieces might just save your wardrobe (trust me ladies!), and this might just be the savior itself!

Fashion Faux Pas: Mid-Calf Hemlines

I am starting to really enjoy writing this category for my blog! Yea, sure it is fun telling you about fabulously, amazing things, but I love to share my, “Oh God, please don’t do that!” knowledge. So here again folks is another post of what not to do….

Hemlines are a serious issue. Not serious like world peace and the current economic state, but they are definitely second in line as far as “serious” things go. I would scream it from the rooftops if I figured someone was listening, but I will just write it in my blog instead: Your skirt should end between your mid-thigh, just below your knees or somewhere in between. Wow, I already feel better. Of course the older you are the lower your hemline should be. I am 30 and moving toward the end of my mid-thigh hemline days…. Of course I think my defiance against this goes hand in hand with my inability to accept that I actually am older. That would mean I would have to actually BE an adult:)

Choosing a hemline that is lower than the bottom of your knees get really tricky. In fact, unless you are 6 feet tall and look like a supermodel, this style will almost instantaneously make you shorter and fatter. I really don’t think looking shorter and fatter has ever been a request of any woman. Think about it, you are cutting yourself off mid-calf making the bottom part of your leg look like a stump. This is taking away from the hourglass figure that we all desire. Of course, pairing a longer, mid-calf length skirt with a pair of flats is only promoting the problem. Now you have flat, stumpy legs. Bad, very bad.

Now here is the good news. If you must choose the mid-calf hemline, you must follow a simple rule: WEAR VERY HIGH HEELS. The 50’s style tea-length dress is great for curvy women, but lengthening the bottom part of your leg is a must. You don’t want the skirt to swallow you and that is what a lower hemline does. The piece wears you rather than you wearing the piece.

So quite simply put, having a good tailor to help you create the right hemline is a must. You have to include the cost of tailoring when you buy an item because without the proper fit and length, owning the item is a waste because it will not do your body justice. Stick to the suggested hemline and you avoid a lot of short and fat pain!

Fashion Faux Pas: Too Tight Clothes!

I know this is not what you expected to see when you clicked on my blog today. I am hoping that your guttural reaction was to hold back from throwing up. This was at least my goal. I want your reaction to be so strong that I truly get my point across with no ifs, ands or buts. This is the beginning of my series, “Fashion Faux Pas Central”, so be ready and prepare yourself….

Fashion faux pas number one: Wearing your clothing too small. Of course it may not be as obvious as this particular picture, but I am trying to make a strong point here. At no time or age is it acceptable to wear your clothing too small. You need to accept the size that you are and buy appropriate clothing for that time in your life. Unfortunately most of the world does fluctuate in size and your wardrobe needs to reflect this. That does not mean that you keep your size 2 dress from 1984 packed in your closet because you might, just might, fit into it again. It ain’t happening sister, move on and pass it on. This does mean that you need to have a range of sizes for the reality of your everchanging figure. Stuffing yourself into a top or buying something that is 2 sizes too small as incentive to lose weight is a big faux pas! Accept yourself and your curves because dressing appropriately for them will not only make you look your best, it will give you the courage to actually lost weight! You don’t want to consistenly remind yourself that you need to lose a few, you want to use positive reinforcement to get you on the “lose a few” bandwagon! When you look and feel good, it encourages you to continue moving in a positive direction. Sausage stuffing clothes are never good for your own psyche or for the eyes of those poor people around you. Love your awesome, sexy self and buy the right size.

The Jean Western Shirt: A Do or a Don’t?

I have such mixed feelings on this. Truthfully, this can be a super hot piece if done correctly. And oh God, it can be painful when done wrong. The problem is, it is SO easy to get this one wrong!

Over the years of working with private clients and digging into the deep, dark depths of many ‘O closets, I have found lots of scary things. The jean shirt is definitely one of them. I will admit that in my day I have trashed quite a few and now, lo and behold, they are back on the trendy wagon. Even I can be wrong sometimes:)

The problem with this piece is that it can be so damn hick that unless you completely funkify it, it looks like you should be at a hoe down in the back woods of Alabama. Not that that is a bad place to be, but there is a very specific look that only works at such a soiree and will not fly anywhere else!
There should be a warning label when purchasing this shirt, “DO NOT EVER WEAR WITH JEANS”. I think many manufacturers forget to attach that tag. How harmful for the very delicate eyes of so many people. It pains me to see the jean tuxedo done so deliberately.

Take a cue from Vanessa Hudgens, show off your sexy, funky, fun side when working the denim western shirt. By pairing it with short shorts and boots you are playing up the western element while touching upon a modern trend. How I do love a themed outfit, not like you are going to the hoedown, but maybe just merely passing by…. She even goes as far as to pull in some western styled jewelry with her cuff bracelet. And look at that fringe bag, LOVE the added effort Vanessa!

So pull out that jean western shirt and start styling. But, be wary and heed the lessons that I have so deliberately taught here. Walk on the right side of fashion and pull off this trend correctly.. Giddy up!

Tall Women Can Find Pants That Fit!!!!

One of my favorite clients is 6′ tall and hot. Unfortunately, the world of clothing is not her best friend. She has tons of trouble finding any pants that don’t end up looking cropped. Note to designers: Not all women are between 5’2″ and 5’8″. They also are not all 115lbs. This may come as a shock to them, but I will continue to try and get the message out there!

As always, I have put on my detective cap and found a store that caters to tall women. Unfortunately, like a lot of major stores, it only caters to them on-line. Alas, at least there is a way to find pants that you can even wear heels with! Crazy, I know.

Banana Republic is fantastic about having an amazing range of sizes… on-line. Big, tall, wide, skinny, this store actually does have it all. When I come across sizing problems, I always turn to their on-line store for both men and women.

This fabulous pair of wide-leg white pants is a perfect option for a taller gal. The amazing thing about this style is that they look the best on taller women and they aren’t even available to them! Listen up my over 5’10” friends, you are the only group of women that can sincerely get away with wearing flats and wide leg pants and look completely hot. Your legs will still look a mile long because they are! How fabulously amazing. So stop complaining that you can’t find pants, know that you can go on-line for incredible styles and enjoy your mile long legs…. While the rest of us are bitching that we have stumps, you can gaze at yourself lovingly and smile:)
