SOOO Many Spring Jean Trends

The denim world has officially gone mad. Each season there are usually one or two new trends that make quite the splash, but this year there are so many I had to choose my favorites. I bought 4 new pairs and I still barely touched the tip of the jean iceberg….

Owning a great, perfectly fitting pair of jeans is a necessity. Finding the afore mentioned unicorn is often times an uphill all out battle for most people. Fret no more, I am not only here to highlight the best jean trends of the season, but to help you pick the right pair for your body type.  Stop buying pair after pair that don’t quite fit right and that you don’t LOVE. Your denim should bring joy to your life, lift your booty by design and NOT be falling off after a few wears.

The biggest trend of the season is the new and updated version of mom jeans. I am not kidding, this trend is VERY real. I am completely obsessed with this version by the Gap . I am usually a jean snob and promote only buying designer options because they truly fit better, but for this super trend I wanted to try something a little less expensive (these are only 50 bucks as opposed to $200!). I typically weigh my options with big trends and ask myself how long I think the trend will last. If I think it is a passing fad, I try out a cheaper option. What really shocked me though is how much I LOVE this pair by the Gap. They fit well and are on point trend-wise. The color is good for the spring and summer seasons, the cropped/split ankle is VERY trendy and the mid-rise waist is super comfortable. If you get one pair of “fad” jeans this season, make it the upgraded mom jean.

The cropped flare ankle is the other top trend of spring ’17. This high waisted pair by Paige is super comfortable and easy to wear with pretty much everything. It is a simple trend that anybody of any age can try out. Switch out your basic skinnies for this cropped flare style and you will instantly be a fashion maven. Style them just as you would any regular pair of jeans and voila, you will automatically be on trend just by switching out one item of your look. The chopped bottom really hits the trendiness home.

The most comfortable trend this season is the simple super high-waisted skinny (add rips for more trend). I have been wearing these J Brand Maria’s everywhere for everything. They create curves where you never knew you had them. I put them on and I instantly have a poppin’ booty. I haven’t met a person yet who isn’t in love with the high waist trend. So long to the days of ass crack hanging out when you bend down to get something! These jeans are the perfect option for someone who wants to dip their toe in the jean trend pond without fully going swimming. It is just a twist on your basic skinnies that you already know and love.

So I know this isn’t a super fad, but I had to touch upon white jeans. They seem to be the nemesis of most women. They love them, but just can’t seem to find the perfect pair that doesn’t show off every nook and cranny. I promote finding a pair that is a bit thicker with some texture to the material. It hides what you don’t want saying hello to the world. The other trick is to get a straight pair that are cropped at the ankle as opposed to a skinny style. They are just slightly more flattering on most body types. No matter what style you choose, finding the perfect white jeans will most likely be an uphill battle, but one that is well worth winning. They can make any outfit clean and crisp during the spring months even when it is still freakin’ cold out. Throw these bad boys on any time after March 15th in anticipation of rising temperatures. Yes, you can wear white before Memorial Day!!!

Above is a harrowing tale about mom jeans gone wrong. No, my ass hanging out is not a trend, this is what happens when you bend over the pick something up in a store and feel a strong breeze against your buttocks. Not cute. Luckily I had a jacket with me to tie around my waist to get home. Even with all my chutzpah (and living in NYC), I couldn’t pretend that this was a purposeful choice. Even though this was clearly God telling me to burn the mom jeans I didn’t listen. I returned them and immediately bought the same pair again.

I want you to jump right into any of these trendy options this season. All you need is to choose one fun pair to hop on the cool kids denim train…..  Finding the right jeans is like dating, it is a numbers game. Once you accept into your heart that you will have to try on a bunch to find the perfect pair, the better the adventure will be. When you do slip into that fabulously amazing, perfectly fitting pair of jeans, you will know it was all worth it.

I am a Sneakerhead

What is a sneakerhead? According to Urban Dictionary it is “a person who collects limited, rare, OG, or flat out exclusive kicks. Usually the collection consists of Jordans or Dunks”.

Now let’s not get crazy, I am not running around in Jordans or $800 one of a kind sneakers, but I am literally wearing some type of sneaker almost everyday. I thank the fashion world everyday for making this “trend” happen because  my little tootsies couldn’t take ballet flats anymore.  This season is all about your sneaker game, we aren’t talking about gym shoes here….

I LOVE my gold Stuart Weitzman high top sneakers.  They have gotten more attention then almost anything I own. The reason is simple, they make a splash while being a realistic style choice for any type of fashionistia. From pumping up the most basic look to adding extra funk to the funkiest outfit. I completely understand that my line of work allows me to make “alternative” fashion choices, but you too can wear sneakers most of your life (outside of a traditional office obviously). There are SO many different dressy and fabulous options these days that pairing anything from a cute dress to jeans with sneakers will work. When a functional yet stylish trend occurs, the world listens.

I am all about my “Jenny from the block” inspired ensemble. Dinner in my hood on a balmy Saturday night never looked so good (or comfortable). White lace up sneakers are all the rage right now and I have been wearing this pair by Vince incessantly.  I have paired them with everything from this high-waisted jean skirt by American Apparel to black ankle pants to an a-line dress. They literally go with EVERYTHING. Keeping them white is the only problem, but a little character from the NYC streets is a must in this town.

Slip on sneakers are a heaven sent for simple, yet chic run-out-the door footwear. Tying shoes can take up a lot of your time if you add it up over a year! Obviously white is a big trend not only in my own wardrobe, but in the general fashion world as well right now. By mixing the crisp nature of white leather with the laid back feeling of a sneaker, your outfit instantly becomes “cool” yet stylishly appropriate for most environments. Almost everyone of my clients own slip on sneakers because they can go from a playdate to the park to dinner to brunch to climbing Mount Everest. Ok, maybe not the last example.

A running sneaker is usually made for just that, running, but this bad boy is for strutting your stuff all over town! This pair by Karl Lagerfeld combines black suede and sparkly sides for extra oomph. They are legitimately created in the likeness of my gym sneakers which makes me smile from ear to ear when I am scaling the many floors of Saks 5th avenue for upwards of 5 hours. I used to come home during my ballet flat days practically in tears and limping, the switch to stylish sneakers was a no-brainer for me. I technically had NO choice unless I wanted to shoot botox into the bottom of my feet to alleviate the pain (this is a real thing people).  Running shoes with stylish 5th avenue worthy ensembles? Yes please.

The above sporty chic look is the most simple way of pulling off the sneaker trend no matter what your age, style or budget. It is essentially an upgraded t-shirt and jeans ensemble, who doesn’t love the basics done right??? Obviously the most important element is choosing the right kicks, if a hightop is too crazy for you go for a slip or slide on just like the ones shown paired with the jeans. A great waist length jacket and messenger bag will not only be stylish, but both will compliment the easy going feel you are most definitely going for. Top the look off with a dope pair of sunnies (aviators are my go-to for sporty chic) and you are ready to conquer the world in a seriously comfortable outfit!

More 90′s Style Please

Well now this is scary. For the first time, I am old enough that I remember the trends of the 90′s because I was already choosing my own outfits back then. Now here I am wearing the same looks in 2017. Shoot me.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

For years I was against tying anything around one’s waist, I felt it made you look dumpy. Now, go figure, I am SO into it. What a convenient way to keep my layering piece close by and ready for use?? I do love a good plaid and utilizing it in your look through “waist wrappage” is a fun way to offer an homage to the 90′s without having it puke all over you. What a lovely visual. Essentially this look is just a tank top with jeans, but by adding the plaid shirt and thin black choker I am SO on-trend. See kids, I can still be cool at 38. You don’t even remember the grunge era!!!!!!

I threw this little number on to go to work because a top knot with dark lips is always appreciated by my clients (at least I hope).  I always say that the size of your hoops represents your “fun” level and based on these, I am super fun. I use them for hula hooping in the evenings. The key to this outfit is again, the no fail ode to the 90′s choker. You never need to buy an entirely new wardrobe to be on trend, it is typically about one or two pieces and in this case, it is the choker and touch of plaid.

I upped the ante of this look by adding a pair of army boots. I will always love Doc Martens, but as an adult (or at least the appearance of one) I went with a more feminine style. These are French Connection and are patent leather. I also went with a personal plaid touch through my coat so once I take it off this trendy look is not SO obvious. It is more a tip of the hat to the 90′s rather then full on Kurt Cobain.

My other obsession right now is the body suit with high waisted jeans. If you set foot in downtown NYC it is pretty much all you will see on every gal roaming around. There is something so simple and sexy about it. I will completely own up  to the fact that the Kardashians 100% inspired this look and I am happy to copy them. The only sad thing is that the BEST body suits are from American Apparel and they literally go out of business forever this week. I went into 5 different locations buying every body suit in site.

And again, we focus on my extra large hoops. These are my best ghetto fab style and instantly kick this outfit up a notch. Hoops are an integral part of the 90′s style. If you purchase only one thing this season to rock a little 90′s in your life, make it a pair of fabulous, super big hoops.

Silk Camisole, Dr. Martens, Lace Bomber, Distressed Jeans, Choker

I am SO obsessed with this collage. It is a more mature version of 90′s style that can be worn by ladies in their 30′s and up. The major element that needs to be altered for the more “age established” ladies are the shoes. Stick with a basic sexy pump over a chunky boot to create a more sophisticated nod to the 90′s.

choker, slip dress, bomber jacket, t-shirt , loafers

Now I want to pretend I am cool enough to wear this, but I just simply am not. This is the type of outfit that I think is dope (yup, I am still cool enough to use that word), but admit looks best on others. The younger ladies can definitely get this funky and really go for it. A fitted t-shirt under a slip dress is so very Clueless (if you don’t know this reference, please dear God look it up), i.e. good for teenagers and 20 somethings. Pulling off a loafer with a long dress also means that you are below a size 4 because you have to be super skinny to have this work. So for all of you that don’t remember this trend the first time around, this look is for you. Go big or go home.

Good Jewelry = Awesome Outfits

Good jewelry is like the best friend who is always there for you, always pumps you up, always has you on your A game… Oh yea, it’s that fabulous.

I have been building my collection since I was pretty much 10 years old. I would go to the mall and stalk the sterling silver kiosk. I would search through my mother’s drawers in hopes of finding some bauble that she wasn’t interested in and steal it for my own collection. Unfortunately my mother wasn’t really into fashion so this adventure proved to be less then fruitful. Ironically, I think that experience has led me to become the treasure hunter I am today. I literally think about what pieces I can pass down to my future off-spring. Will they think grandma is cool based on her jewelry collection??? These types of questions haunt me and drive me to search for awesomeness. I wish I was kidding.

It isn’t just “real” pieces that are included in my hunt. This huge crystal piece by Barbara Pellegrino actually hurts slightly because of the sheer weight of the stone. Who cares, it is amazing. It was a gift from a lovely gentleman I dated who truly took notice of my fun jewelry collection and gave me something that I couldn’t have even dreamed up on my own. Kudos to a dude who is that aware! It is doubly as cool because both sides of the chain are different. My grandkids are either going to think I’m nuts or amazing, but I don’t think that is specifically related to this piece of jewelry.

I am also drawn to sentimental pieces. This broach is my own creation and I LOVE it. If you look closely you can see that it is family pictures of my brother and I. They were charms that my Nana had made for a necklace of hers. I took a hat pin and strategically placed them on to show off my own baby pictures. Weird, but awesome. I added another broach right above it to create a real “moment”.

Good Jewelry=Awesome Outfit 4

I am also obsessed with great costume jewelry. This ring is three stones, but really one piece. I can’t move my fingers all that well when I have it on, but who cares because people think it is so cool (which it is). It is by Kendra Scott and it is one of the only things I have ever paid full price for. It was too amazing to pass up.  Adding a layered up bracelet look (otherwise known as “arm candy”) only added to my funk factor. It is a great way to re-use pieces you may have had for forever in new and interesting ways.

 Good Jewelry=Awesome Outfit 5

Buying jewelry when I travel has become part of my reason for traveling. These earrings are from a tiny shop in no-where Colorado on a mountain top. They are made by a Native American women and are created from porcupine quills. How freakin’ cool.  The top silver bracelet is from a small surfing town in Costa Rica and the larger cuff with a medallion is from Big Sur. The watch in the middle is from Guess and I pulled it out of retirement from 10 years ago! Not exactly sentimental, but mixing pieces together is the key to showcasing your jewelry talent.

My final and most important way of creating the grand collection of jewelry I have today is from flea markets, thrift stores and consignment shops. You literally have no idea what you are going to find, it is the best treasure hunt. You may not be fruitful every time, but continuing the search for  your next great piece is half the fun. I am obsessed with my silver Wonder Woman cuff. It certainly makes a statement. The middle silver ring is also from a flea market, but was from a sterling silver vendor showcasing brand new goods. The thin sapphire ring is real (I had it checked out) and it is from a consignment shop in upstate New York that I bought for 10 bucks. See, you never know what you are going to find…..

Good Jewelry Collage

With any client, I always begin with foundation pieces, even in their jewelry collection. It doesn’t matter if it is silver or gold, just pick the metal you love. For most people, I suggest getting these staple items in BOTH metals. They include a medium pair of thin hoops, a short delicate necklace, a long medallion type necklace, a thin layering bracelet and an elegant yet bold neutral ring. You can layer all of these pieces in your ever growing jewelry collection or you can wear them on their own. It is the perfect place for someone new to the jewelry game to begin. This is one of the only areas of your wardrobe where I say more is better. Jewelry can completely change your look and that is something worth collecting over….

Date Night Looks

Planning an outfit for a big date can be torture.

So let me make this whole date night thing easy for you. The first important question is what number date is it? Are you meeting for the first time? Are you 5 dates in? Is your husband finally taking you on that date he promised you?? You want to look hot no matter what, but appropriate. The other big question is, where are you going? Are we talking dinner here or an evening of libations galore. Note to my readers: Too many libations make for bad date decisions. Just a personal note from my personal history:)

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

The ensemble above is a great example of a perfect first date outfit. It is simple, stylish and sexy. You are showing off your figure without giving it all away. You want them to want more ladies! A skinny pair of jeans is always a perfect fit for meeting someone for the first time. Boys usually aren’t going to be dressed to the 9′s (until you fix them) so you don’t want to make them uncomfortable with your over the top fabulousness. Choose a heel height based on your date’s height. Usually you know this going in because the whole world now meets people on the internet and you learn how tall they are first. If you don’t know going in, pick a smaller heel or even a sexy flat if you are comfortable with it. Men rarely like having a first impression being you towering over them…..

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

This can also pass for a first date look. It is slightly more casual because the top is so flowy, but I assure you that it is actually also low-cut. Again, you are showing off without SHOWING OFF. This outfit is great for something a little more low key or earlier in the day. If it is a daytime date you can always switch to a flat shoe and a bigger bag.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

This look is taking us into the evening most likely on a date past number one or two. You definitely now know the person you are meeting in this outfit. You are aware of their style and what looks appropriate next to them. Yes, you want to dress appropriately for the person that you are with. I know this might sound crazy, but you can’t show up all super edgy or crazy funky and they are looking like they are going to the yacht club. I am not suggesting that you shouldn’t be yourself, I am just saying that your style should encourage them to be their best without overshadowing them or looking mis-matched.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

This next date outfit says, “Take me out now husband, I am still your sexy-ass wife who needs to be courted no matter how long we have been together.” I always joke with my female client’s husbands that I am creating outfits for date night so they better start planning. This look is fun, playful and sophisticated. And did I mention sexy? Yup, bring the sexy back, your husband will appreciate it.

date night look

Here are some great items that can either be used all together to create a great first date look or individually. Your go-to pieces to own that are no fail in any situation with any date are always going to be skinny jeans, a cute neutral blouse, a sassy jacket, a clutch and a mid-height heeled shoe. You can mix and match these pieces with everything in your wardrobe to get that, “I just threw this together, but I am a sexy bitch” look. Obviously that is professional terminology for trapping a man with your fabulous style:)
