Jumpers, Holy Bananas!

I love a jumper, a onesie, a romper…. Whatever you want to call it, I’m obsessed with the adorable ease of this one piece wonder that looks cute on almost all figures and ages. Yes, you have to choose your style wisely as to not look like an adult channeling a teenager (or a two year old for that matter), but there is an appropriate option for everyone. EVERYONE.

I recently made the mistake of counting how many jumpers I had in my wardrobe and once I got up to 18 I stopped. My obsession has clearly gotten out of control. Or has it? Every single jumper I own truly has it’s own personality and purpose. Below are a few of my favorite options. I leave it up to you to scold me for my addiction…. Or go out and build your own collection once you fall deeply in love with this style……

Everyone knows that jumpers are great for casual activities, but what about dressy events? I fell in love with this floral jumper the moment I saw it. I had no idea what fabulous event it was going to, but it was 30 bucks and fit like a glove. Shortly after I bought it I was invited to a horse race, event found. A jumper is a great option instead of a dress, choose something different. You stand out in a good way!!! Trust me, every lady tugging at her dress will wish she was you looking trendy, cool and comfortable in an awesome jumper.

Another fabulous way to rock a jumper is by wearing it as a bathing suit cover up. How freakin’ chic are you? It may take a little more to get down to your sexy swimsuit, but it it totally worth it. Choose a cotton style to keep it cool and simple.

Lately I have an obsession with American Eagle. It is true, I’m almost 40 and this store appears to be for teenagers, but I swear it is for everyone!!! I got this awesome comfy and casual jumper at the beginning of the summer and I have worn it to death. It is light-weight and easy to get on and off  (think bathroom breaks) making it a no-brainer for a super hot day. Plus anything with ruffles is making it into my wardrobe right now, they make everything sassy and fun.

This is my travel jumper. Yes, I wear the same thing when I travel during the summer months because well, it is perfect. I have no shame admitting that I bought this baby at Forever 21 about 7 years ago and she is still rocking it. It only comes out when I’m getting on an airplane so I get a little giddy when I put it on because it means I’m going somewhere fabulous! It has gotten to the point where my friends also call it the “travel jumper” because they expect to see me in it if we are traveling together.  The joy of this jumper is that even styled with a jean jacket (airplanes are cold!) I can pull it down and up easily in the ridiculously small airplane bathroom. Super functional, super comfortable, super stylish.

This is one of my favorite jumpers. I look like a big, sexy banana. I bought it at a vintage store and in a very rare occurrence, I had buyers remorse.  I just wasn’t sure that this oversized jumper was my style. When I finally pulled it out on my trip to Tuscany last summer I fell in serious love. It is stupidly comfortable and chic as shit. People also seem to lose their minds over it. Every time I have worn it since people have gone crazy over it!

In one of the biggest moments of my career I definitely thought a jumper was the best choice. Who doesn’t want to rock a red carpet in an insanely fabulous and cool onesie!!! I was lucky enough to borrow this from Rent the Runway and feel ever so confident walking the carpet following Alissa Milano (crazy). It is by Erin Fetherston and it is awesome. The only snafu with this jumper was that I was literally taped into it. I barely drank anything all day knowing that I could not pee 50 times the way I usually do. My solution? Wait until I got to the event to begin my drinking extravaganza and bring a ton of double stick tape to put myself back into this thing when I finally did inevitably go to the bathroom. Problem solved!!!

4th of July Style

July 4th is my ultimate favorite holiday! Why you ask? Well for starters it is at the very beginning of the summer meaning there is tons of warm weather to come. Secondly there is no real activity expected other than eating, drinking and lighting off fireworks. And finally, for the past 20 years I have been chilling in upstate New York at my best friend’s house which is conveniently located on one of the finger lakes. It is a little slice of heaven with people I adore and are like my second family.

Now even though this chilling is insanely relaxed, I still have a stylish reputation to uphold. With any holiday comes the “costuming” part of the equation. What am I going to wear to fully represent honoring our forefathers? Below are some cute ideas for doing just that, George Washington would be proud.

Last year I was lucky enough to bring along my entire family. Yes that means 6 other people besides myself, my second family and the one I was born with luckily really like each other! As you can tell from the picture above, I’m not the only stylish one in my clan. My nephew Nathan believes in dressing up appropriately for July 4th as well (or at least his “stylist” mother does). The key to any good themed look is to make sure it is just that, a theme. You should not end up looking like you are wearing a costume. To execute this properly you have to be playful with the concept. A little red here, a little blue there, throw in a splash of white and you are good to go.

Red and White Romper

                Romper

I’m all about a comfy and cute romper. Yes it is age specific, but I’m almost 40 and still rocking it so don’t be afraid of an awesome onesie. I LOVE the one above because it is actually easy to go to the bathroom. It is obviously cute which is super important, but every lady who has worn a jumper knows that the second most important element of this piece is simplicity with the on/off function. The other great element of this romper is that although it is July 4th friendly, it can also be worn any other day of the summer without hesitation. Remember my words of wisdom, think theme NOT costume!

Blue Headband

Headband

Adding a themed headband is the most inexpensive and easy way to show off your patriotic side on July 4th. You can pick something like this up for around $10 and slap on a red lip, boom, July 4th ready. This particular option is also utilizing a big trend for summer ’18, gingham. So don’t worry about this cheap and chic purchase, you can definitely wear it over and over throughout this summer season!

Red swimsuit

Red Swimsuit

What July 4th holiday is complete without a dip in the water? Why not choose a fabulous swimsuit to compliment your love of all things America? This awesome red one-piece is not only super patriotic, but it screams 007 babe. Why not conquer 2 amazing themes in one? You are a sexy James Bond girl that loves her country.

Ray bans

Sunglasses

The final touch of any great July 4th look is always going to be your sunnies. One thing you can almost always count on for this summer holiday is some rays, so why not protect your eyes in style? I love RayBans in general, but their aviator style is always on point, or as the kids say, “on fleek”. The blue tinted lenses let people know that you think our forefathers rock and that you are stylishly proud of the place you call home.

Now July 4th will not only be about beer, fireworks, burgers, barbecues, boats, the beach or whatever you do to celebrate this rad summer holiday! It will mostly be about the most important thing that binds us together as Americans, your super cute and stylish July 4th outfit!!!

My Top 5 Summer Trends ’18

Summer appears to finally be upon us so I want to make sure everyone is ready with my favorite style trends! Every season there are TONS of options to be “on fleek” (yes, I just said that), but let me assist you in narrowing your choices down. Below are some of my top trendy picks for summer 2018 that are (mostly) easy to mix into any woman’s wardrobe no matter your age, budget or lifestyle. Easy peezy.

So of course I started with the most daring and controversial “trend” of them all. Why the quotations around the word trend? Because I totally and unequivocally understand that this has been culturally tied to many beautiful ethnicities for years and to call it a trend is often times mis-understood. My reason for covering the turban tie craze at the moment is simple. I was lucky enough to go to the YSL museum in Marrakech and in almost every show he did there were absolutely stunning turbans incorporated into his runway shows. I was inspired. There will always be fashion inspiration pulled from culturally specific styles, my love of the turban is done with the utmost respect and sheer admiration for Yves Saint Laurent himself. If you have the cajones I strongly suggest trying one of the turban ties in the video above.  It instantly ups the ante of any ensemble and makes a bad hair day disappear into fabulousness…..

Sandal:sneaker

Sneaker Sandals

Honesty is always the best policy so let me be clear, the slide is the number one trend this season for shoes. So why am I featuring the sneaker sandal? The reason is simple, slides are cute but they literally do not stay on your foot when you walk. How can I feature something that requires flexing your toes at all times to strut your stuff? I just can’t. The functional side of me that believes in comfort and reality MIXED with together style will not allow it. So I’m suggesting purchasing a pair of the second biggest trend for 2018 in shoes, the sneaker sandal. Yes they have an “old lady” flare, but that is kind of the whole point. Let your granny flag fly and finally wear sandals that love you back as much as you love them. Think of them as sporty, they are great for promoting your love of all things athleisure!

Eyelet top

Eyelet

I love eyelet. It’s fun, flirty and super summer”y”. It is one of those materials that really only works during the warmer months so you should take advantage of it! I have owned everything from an eyelet dress to a top to shorts…. Even shoes!  The list is endless, pick your poison and mix it into what you already own easily. The key is to keep the texture and pattern of everything else you are wearing solid. Your eyelet item should be your stand out piece.

Fringe bag

Fringe

There is a double trend happening here! Straw bags are all the rage right now, they bring the beach with you everywhere. Adding in a touch of trendy fringe brings this bag to the next level. The idea that straw bags are only meant for the sandy shores is done. Throw on a t-shirt and jeans shorts (every smart gals summer uniform) and pair it with a straw and fringe carry-all to hit your summer look home. Yes there is a danger of smaller items falling through the literal crack of this bag so be smart. Either use a smaller cloth bag inside of your straw bag  (a make-up bag will do) OR only carry bigger items. It is an easy fix that allows you to love this summer 2018 trend!

Off the Shoulder

Off the Shoulder

I both love and hate the off-the-shoulder trend. Why you ask? Because it looks hot as hell (a clavicle bone is sexy), but you can’t move your arms. It is truly a love/hate relationship. I strongly suggest to my clients that this is a summer 2018 trend best left for an evening extravaganza. If you are running around at the park or doing errands  having immobile arms is not your best option. But, if you are drinking your share of Aperol spritz’s at the cliffside beach club then this stylish and fabulous summer trend is perfect!

So with the warmth of the summer finally upon us you can shop my 2018 trend suggestions immediately! Do not stop, do not pass go, just do it.

4 EASY Ways to Tie a Turban

Oh yea, turbans are in. I don’t know about you, but I’m psyched. A trend that makes you look fabulous in an instant and allows you to skip doing your hair all in one? Hell yes. OBSESSED. Obviously this trend has been around in different cultures for years, but for many the idea of adding a turban to to your look is a new (and amazing) concept. I always just assumed it was difficult and therefore annoying to even try. I was wrong. See, I can admit when I’m not right (that was directed at all my ex-boyfriends). So check you this easy tutorial I made with my favorite 4 ways to tie a turban and you too can be a turban tying expert. Say goodbye to bad hair days and start using all those scarves you own but NEVER use.

How to Pack for a Warm Getaway

Now is about the time when I have fully lost my mind over the cold weather. As a New Yorker, it has been some form of cold for about 5 months. This is when the sentence, “Why do I live here???” starts to go on repeat in my head. What is the short and sweet conclusion to solving the cold weather blues? Vacation baby.

There is nothing like a quick warm weather getaway to brighten your smile and give you the dose of vitamin D your body is desperately craving. Choosing to leave your stresses behind does not mean you should now begin stressing about what to pack. The easiest way to calm your styling nerves is to remember, less is more, literally. The joys of a quick jaunt to a beach weekend with above 80 degree temperatures is that the less you layer, the better. You should EASILY be able to pack 4-5 outfits, plus swimsuit options, in a carry-on bag. If you start to think about checking something, you have gone too far. YOU DO NOT NEED 10 “MAYBE” OUTFITS CRAZY. You need 4-5 awesome looks and you should pack with that in mind.

I was lucky enough to attend my friend’s wedding in Cabo this winter making it the perfect warm getaway I was looking for. Full disclosure, the looks you are about to see are “Mexico” inspired, but it’s the concept of how I packed for this short trip that matters. You should never pack items to be styled later, the key to great packing is all about creating the looks PRIOR to going.  Yes, you will obviously throw in a few extra items for the “just in case” moments of the trip, but overall, you should have styled looks for all the “events ” ready to go. The events could be as simple as: 4 days on the beach, 2 days in town shopping and 4 dinners out. You most likely will have some idea of what you are doing even if it isn’t formally scheduled.

Don’t jump ahead of yourself and become overwhelmed by making the perfect outfit for every moment of the trip, take a step back. Start by asking yourself the below questions:

*Are there any pieces you love and definitely want to bring?

*Do you have favorite items that always seem to work, even if you are having a styling melt down?

*What is the temperature there both in the day and in the night?

*What activities do you plan on doing? Is this a drinking trip or will active adventure be mixed in??

*Who will you be traveling with and what is appropriate?

*What basic items do I need no matter what? Think hat, bathing suit, sunglasses, underwear……

These questions are meant to make your life easier so when you begin to think about what to bring, you will already have guidelines.

Next up, start pulling out the items that fit the guidelines you have already set out for yourself. You should start thinking about the questions in advance of doing this and keep a note in your phone that lists the items. That makes your packing time that much easier! After you pull out those items, start to think about pieces that could easily mix in with any of the chosen pieces. This would be something like a jean jacket to layer, a gold pair of sandals, jean shorts or a neutral colored swimsuit cover up. You MUST include items that can be re-styled with multiple outfits to save room in your very tiny carry-on (thank you annoying airlines).

 PACKING LIST

Above is a great example of a typical packing list for a 5 day warm weather getaway. Obviously you should put your own spin on it by including specific items from your own wardrobe, but this is a good baseline list. You most likely WILL NOT use everything on this list, but pulling all of it out and seeing where the styling fairy (you) takes it is a good place to start. What you do not style, you should put back in your closet. I reiterate, YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING THE KITCHEN SINK!! If you do not style it at home, you do not need to bring it. Be hard on yourself by truly following this rule. You will finally NOT over pack and you will avoid becoming overwhelmed upon arrival because all of your looks are already styled.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

Now comes the fun part, actual styling!!! Remember, you have already done the hardest part so styling is going to be a breeze….. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you CAN do this and that you are not going to rip your hair out. Lay out all of the items on your list either on the floor or on your bed. Keep the pieces to be styled multiple ways on one side and your more fun, singular options on the other. This is defined by neutrals that can easily blend in without being fully recognized and loud, individual pieces that are showstoppers. For example, the outfit above has a white tank (neutral, lots of styling options) and crazy pants (fully recognized and loud). Don’t shoot yourself if you can’t figure out the difference, just go with your gut. This makes it way easier to mix and match things knowing that you are only re-using the “to be styled multiple ways” items well, multiple ways.

I only have one main warning to clients and followers, limit your shoes and bags!!!! This is the fastest way to overpack and weigh down your suitcase. You do not need a different pair of shoes and bag for EVERY look. You need neutral yet fabulous options that can realistically go with multiple looks. This typically means the bag or shoes should be metallic or nude in color, these options give optimal styling potential! As for bags, a great beach bag, a daytime casual bag for roaming around and one evening option are all that is needed. FOLLOW THE LIST. Stop the madness, you are overwhelming yourself even more by brining TOO MUCH stuff. The only pass you get is on accessories. I’m all about switching up a look by choosing different accessories and they don’t take up any room. Lots O scarves, tons of jewelry and sassy sunglasses are always easy to stuff into your bag so bring it on.

Processed with VSCO with s3 preset

The final step is styling some bomb outfits for your dope upcoming trip. This is your time to shine. Mix pieces from the loud side and pieces from the neutral side to create some fabulous options. The easiest rule to follow is this:

NEUTRAL + NEUTRAL= AWESOME

NEUTRAL + LOUD= AWESOME

LOUD + LOUD= POSSIBLY CRAY UNLESS YOU ARE A SUPER FASHIONABLE GAL

Stick to only what you have pulled based on your list and it will make your life so much easier. You can worry about jewelry later if it is too overwhelming now, you should have enough with you to make the final touches once you arrive at your destination. The most important thing is to follow your itinerary and style realistic outfits for what you will be doing. Do not style more outfits than you need, you are only making your own life more miserable. Remember, the entire point of following this system is to make you not explode! Finally, TAKE PICTURES, it will make your life so much easier once you get there and have to remember what the hell you did at home. All of the looks you see above were done following this system. Long before they were put on my body in Mexico they were styled on the floor at home in my apartment. I confidently went to Cabo knowing I would be fab, you can do the same sans the blood, sweat and tears. Go forth and pack confidently!
