Best (Swim) Suits of Summer!

That’s right folks, it’s time for everyone’s favorite subject, swimsuits. If the sarcasm isn’t apparent in that last statement, then you are a rare creature because NO ONE likes swimsuit shopping. Alas, pools and oceans await and since head to toe spandex onesies are not yet in style, let me guide you through choosing the right bathing suit for your lifestyle and shape.

Now before we begin, I want to address the fact that this post appears to be a bevy of gratuitous shots showing off my near-naked swimsuit clad body. In response to this I say, you damn right peeps. I work hard to keep my bits and pieces in place and although I mostly look like the shots below, I want to offer some “full-disclosure” information: Yes, I filter.  And yes, I have no shame in admitting this. I believe in health, fitness and honesty. We all come in different shapes and sizes and if I have learned anything working in this business for over 15 years, it is that no matter what size a person is, they still have some issue with something. I want for all women to understand that clothing and/or lack there of (swimsuits) can help to create a more confident and sexy you. No body is perfect, not even Christie Brinkley (who looks hella good at 63!!!!).

I am very down with the one-piece bathing suit right now. Anything that can serve two purposes (act as a body suit AND a swimsuit) is dope. If you read this blog regularly, you now I am the queen of function and fashion. On this fabulous day I was in Capri with no idea how my time was going to play out. I wanted to wear something that I could shop, eat, sunbathe and swim in. Voila, one piece swimsuit with shorts and a fabulous hat, yes please. I was covered enough to walk into Cartier (because I shop there SO much:) and naked enough to take a dip in the Mediterranean. I found this cute bathing suit at Zara for only $30. I am truly an advocate of buying more expensive swimsuits typically, but this one was a good fun and done, one season piece. More on why spending money on bathing suits is so important later…..

Oh the infamous white bikini.  It is what I would consider the end all, be all of perfect swimwear. So sexy and chic. It is almost like a unicorn, beautiful and fabulous yet essentially impossible to find. That is why when you do find one that lifts, tucks and covers correctly, throw down your credit card. I came across this beauty at Beach Bunny in Miami. I really love their designs, but they definitely are not known for coverage. Somehow they can take the smallest amount of material and have it lift everything just right. At $200, it’s a little pricey, but as I mentioned above, spending money on swimsuits is vital. Cheap bathing suits lose their shape quickly and truly do not offer the proper support for your boobies or bum. I know it is a tough pill to swallow considering how small bathing suits are and how crazy the mark-up must be, but you just have to go with it on this one. Spending more to look better in less material is a no brainer folks.

I know the concept of a smaller bottomed bathing suit is absurd to most Americans (except for people that live in Miami), but do you want your arse to look better or not??? Go ahead, argue with me that this concept is ridiculous. That having a smaller bottom will only enhance the “problem area” you call your ass, but I will continue to disagree. We are not talking g-string here folks, I am just saying that it should slightly give you a comfortable wedgie. I am half kidding. No matter weather your bum is smaller, bigger, flat or round, wearing a smaller bathing suit bottom will create a much more sexy and flattering backside.

The sporty swimsuit is in and it is here to stay. Florissant colors,  fun piping and actual support are cool and you should go out and pick this style up. The great thing about this bathing suit is that you can actually have fun doing summer sports while wearing it. Look hot while playing volleyball. This particular suit has a string style top, but go for the sports bra-esque look and really rock out while playing paddle ball.

I love a good theme, even in a swimsuit. I am kind of obsessed with this cha cha bikini. I need to book a trip to Mexico just so I can prance through the ocean in it. Yes, I buy clothing to match non-existent trips. The story behind this bikini is a tale of, “Oh my God, I just found the greatest secret trove of bathing suits and cover ups in all of New York City”. I went into a sporting goods store (Paragon Sports, check it out, it’s dope), and low and behold, they had a massive selection of mostly on-sale bathing suit related items. I went nuts. This particular suit had mix and match tops and bottoms so I literally “designed” this look. This is a very hot trend right now and makes you the creator of your own bathing suit destiny. Try it within your own bathing suit collection, mixing and matching what you have will “double” the amount of swimsuits you already have! Obsessed.

Finally, what are the trends of the season and which ones are best for your body type? Here are my top 5 picks in no particular order:

1. The High Waisted Bikini: I don’t actually love this style. Ok, so that’s probably not my best sales pitch, but as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, honesty is the best policy. People have been tricked into thinking that the higher waist is covering your stomach and therefore making it more flattering. Wrong. It is actually accentuating the negative and making you look 3 months pregnant. Even if you are a skinny minny, this swimsuit style will just make you look like you borrowed your grandmother’s sexy bikini. I.E. NOT SEXY.

2. The Ruched One Piece Swimsuit: This is truly one of the best styles on the market. As opposed to the high waisted bikini, this bathing suit actually does cover an imperfect stomach. The front knot on this black option does double duty by drawing the eye to the center giving the illusion of being even skinnier. Who doesn’t want that? There is extra coverage down below, but by keeping the top open, the suit is still sexy yet functional. I have bought this for several clients with both big and small chests, don’t worry, they aren’t going to fall out.

3. Off the Shoulder Bikini:  This bathing suit is super cute and super trendy, but be warned, funky tan lines are in your future. Yes, you can take your arms out while you sunbathe, but then don’t you lose the whole point of this style? Essentially, if you want to look cool while sipping cocktails in a shady area and don’t mind that you have alligator arms (you seriously can’t move your arms), then this cool and uber fun bikini is for you.

4. Cut Out  One-Piece Bathing Suit: Again, there is a strong recommendation to avoid sun tanning in this (unless having a tan triangle in the middle of your boobs is your thing). This swimsuit is made for yachting and fabulous cocktails at the pool club where you never actually set foot in the pool. The criss-cross panels give you amazing coverage and the cut-out pattern says, “I’m sexy in a “rich bitch sort of way”. I’ve never been on a yacht, but at least I know what I’m gonna wear when I am.

5. String BikiniOh the good ol’ string bikini. It inflicts sheer terror in so many people and I completely understand. It is literally the smallest thing you can wear in public and still be respectable. With that said, if you got it, flaunt it. The string bikini is here to stay, it is not a fad, it is a staple. To wear this bathing suit there are a few simple rules: Have high, perky boobs and a tight butt. No miracles here, your everything is showing when you wear this so your everything better be pretty good.

Amy’s New Reel

Here it is folks, what you have been waiting for your entire lives….. My new, fabulous reel. So maybe the build up was a bit much, but seriously, it was time for a new reel. I don’t even think I had found clip-in hair extensions or botox in my last reel, meaning, I possibly look better and younger this time. POSSIBLY. Either way, here she is, shiny and new, enjoy!

Sunglasses Change Everything

I LOVE sunglasses. Think about it, they are the first thing people see and therefore, the kick off point to your entire ensemble. My collection is vast and choosing the right pair to complement each of my looks is a thought out process (I am sure you are very surprised).

I completely understand that most people own one to five pairs of sunglasses, so why not make them the RIGHT pairs? If you choose wisely, they will each serve a very important role in your overall look. Just as the title of this post says, sunglasses change everything! They can change your entire look instantly, either upping the ante or promoting it’s downfall, you decide. It is a massive pet peeve of mine when people have on something fabulous and then pay no attention to the accouterments such as a coat or in this case, your sunnies. Have pride in all the details, why tear down all of that hard work you put into your outfit???

There is nothing like a good session of trying on tons O sunglasses. It is an important right of passage when choosing the perfect pair of shades. Face shape can be a tough thing if you aren’t practiced in the art of choosing sunglasses. The rule of thumb is pretty logical actually, be aware of the size of your face. For example, if you have a larger face, choose a larger pair, if you have a smaller face, choose a smaller pair. Yes, it is really that simple. This formula should be used in relation to the actual shape of your face. Is your face long and skinny? Is it small and round? Essentially, the sunglasses you choose should be proportional to your specific face. What is a huge pair of sunnies to one person might be just the right size for another person. Don’t get frustrated, know that this process takes time to perfect and you might be in the store for more then a second. Think of it as a fun journey where the end is better then a pot of gold, it is AWESOME sunglasses.

One of the best companies on the market is Rayban and one of their best pairs in the wayfarer. This style has been around forever and has proven to be above the trends lasting the test of time. The truly genius thing about these sunglasses is that not only are they unisex, but they pretty much look good on EVERYBODY. They come in a few different sizes so they will literally fit any person, any time, any place. These are the fastest way to looking like a rebel instantly. When I want to put a little punch in my look, I grab for these. They have a bad ass vibe that doesn’t go overboard so even the cutest, preppiest person on the planet could rock them and feel like they work. They are my go-to pair for traveling when I don’t want to bring the kitchen sink because they work in every situation with every type of audience.

One of my favorite things about sunglasses is that they truly can make you look fabulous in an instant. Take this Celine pair for instance, hello celebrity awesomeness?!?! Who do I think I am in these things? Amy Salinger, that’s who. I completely stole the idea of loving these from the Kardashians, but I am cool with that. Every time I saw one of them in these I was instantly jealous. What I wasn’t jealous of was the price tag. They are around $300 and that seemed crazy because it is. Alas, I searched and I searched and I did find them for $200 (still crazy I might add). But, my rule is that if you truly LOVE something you will wear it and the price is worth it. I love to chat about cost per wear and with sunglasses, you really can rationalize the price because you wear them all the time. Plastic is still plastic and the cost of sunnies is totally and utterly ridiculous, but I wear these constantly and have long ago decided they were well worth it. I tried to find a pair that I loved just as much for less that would fill the big, black sunglasses void to no avail. Celine is my girl.

And again we revisit my love affair with Rayban. It is the poor man’s rich and the rich man’s poor making it the perfect price point for everybody. At around $130 per pair, they are completely worth it because the quality is there without the insane price. Next to the wayfarer, the aviator is my jam. Yes, just like the wayfarer they are unisex. Yes, just like the wayfarer they fit most face types. And yes, just like the wayfarer they are HOT!!! Seriously though, I have always said that a man in an aviator is sexy no matter his face looks like underneath them. There is just something about them. If you own one pair of sunglasses, make it the aviator. They can be sporty, fabulous and sexy all at the same time.

I love the brand of these lucite and gold sunglasses. They are a bit underground, but of course “fashion people” have become obsessed. They are called Retro Superfuture and they are all the rage. They are made in Italy and each pair is individually made meaning they all fit slightly differently. The quality is there for what seems like a reasonable price point in expensive, hand-made sunglasses land at $200 a pop. I randomly found them in a Hampton’s store and fell in love immediately. These sunnies remind you that the sides of your sunglasses are just as important as the front of your sunglasses!!

Sunglasses Collage

So the take away from this blog post is that you should put as much energy into your sunglasses as you do into your outfit. Finding the perfect pair is a quest that is well worth the time. Your collection should include a fabulous style, a rebel look and a sporty pair, beyond that the world is your oyster.

SOOO Many Spring Jean Trends

The denim world has officially gone mad. Each season there are usually one or two new trends that make quite the splash, but this year there are so many I had to choose my favorites. I bought 4 new pairs and I still barely touched the tip of the jean iceberg….

Owning a great, perfectly fitting pair of jeans is a necessity. Finding the afore mentioned unicorn is often times an uphill all out battle for most people. Fret no more, I am not only here to highlight the best jean trends of the season, but to help you pick the right pair for your body type.  Stop buying pair after pair that don’t quite fit right and that you don’t LOVE. Your denim should bring joy to your life, lift your booty by design and NOT be falling off after a few wears.

The biggest trend of the season is the new and updated version of mom jeans. I am not kidding, this trend is VERY real. I am completely obsessed with this version by the Gap . I am usually a jean snob and promote only buying designer options because they truly fit better, but for this super trend I wanted to try something a little less expensive (these are only 50 bucks as opposed to $200!). I typically weigh my options with big trends and ask myself how long I think the trend will last. If I think it is a passing fad, I try out a cheaper option. What really shocked me though is how much I LOVE this pair by the Gap. They fit well and are on point trend-wise. The color is good for the spring and summer seasons, the cropped/split ankle is VERY trendy and the mid-rise waist is super comfortable. If you get one pair of “fad” jeans this season, make it the upgraded mom jean.

The cropped flare ankle is the other top trend of spring ’17. This high waisted pair by Paige is super comfortable and easy to wear with pretty much everything. It is a simple trend that anybody of any age can try out. Switch out your basic skinnies for this cropped flare style and you will instantly be a fashion maven. Style them just as you would any regular pair of jeans and voila, you will automatically be on trend just by switching out one item of your look. The chopped bottom really hits the trendiness home.

The most comfortable trend this season is the simple super high-waisted skinny (add rips for more trend). I have been wearing these J Brand Maria’s everywhere for everything. They create curves where you never knew you had them. I put them on and I instantly have a poppin’ booty. I haven’t met a person yet who isn’t in love with the high waist trend. So long to the days of ass crack hanging out when you bend down to get something! These jeans are the perfect option for someone who wants to dip their toe in the jean trend pond without fully going swimming. It is just a twist on your basic skinnies that you already know and love.

So I know this isn’t a super fad, but I had to touch upon white jeans. They seem to be the nemesis of most women. They love them, but just can’t seem to find the perfect pair that doesn’t show off every nook and cranny. I promote finding a pair that is a bit thicker with some texture to the material. It hides what you don’t want saying hello to the world. The other trick is to get a straight pair that are cropped at the ankle as opposed to a skinny style. They are just slightly more flattering on most body types. No matter what style you choose, finding the perfect white jeans will most likely be an uphill battle, but one that is well worth winning. They can make any outfit clean and crisp during the spring months even when it is still freakin’ cold out. Throw these bad boys on any time after March 15th in anticipation of rising temperatures. Yes, you can wear white before Memorial Day!!!

Above is a harrowing tale about mom jeans gone wrong. No, my ass hanging out is not a trend, this is what happens when you bend over the pick something up in a store and feel a strong breeze against your buttocks. Not cute. Luckily I had a jacket with me to tie around my waist to get home. Even with all my chutzpah (and living in NYC), I couldn’t pretend that this was a purposeful choice. Even though this was clearly God telling me to burn the mom jeans I didn’t listen. I returned them and immediately bought the same pair again.

I want you to jump right into any of these trendy options this season. All you need is to choose one fun pair to hop on the cool kids denim train…..  Finding the right jeans is like dating, it is a numbers game. Once you accept into your heart that you will have to try on a bunch to find the perfect pair, the better the adventure will be. When you do slip into that fabulously amazing, perfectly fitting pair of jeans, you will know it was all worth it.

I am a Sneakerhead

What is a sneakerhead? According to Urban Dictionary it is “a person who collects limited, rare, OG, or flat out exclusive kicks. Usually the collection consists of Jordans or Dunks”.

Now let’s not get crazy, I am not running around in Jordans or $800 one of a kind sneakers, but I am literally wearing some type of sneaker almost everyday. I thank the fashion world everyday for making this “trend” happen because  my little tootsies couldn’t take ballet flats anymore.  This season is all about your sneaker game, we aren’t talking about gym shoes here….

I LOVE my gold Stuart Weitzman high top sneakers.  They have gotten more attention then almost anything I own. The reason is simple, they make a splash while being a realistic style choice for any type of fashionistia. From pumping up the most basic look to adding extra funk to the funkiest outfit. I completely understand that my line of work allows me to make “alternative” fashion choices, but you too can wear sneakers most of your life (outside of a traditional office obviously). There are SO many different dressy and fabulous options these days that pairing anything from a cute dress to jeans with sneakers will work. When a functional yet stylish trend occurs, the world listens.

I am all about my “Jenny from the block” inspired ensemble. Dinner in my hood on a balmy Saturday night never looked so good (or comfortable). White lace up sneakers are all the rage right now and I have been wearing this pair by Vince incessantly.  I have paired them with everything from this high-waisted jean skirt by American Apparel to black ankle pants to an a-line dress. They literally go with EVERYTHING. Keeping them white is the only problem, but a little character from the NYC streets is a must in this town.

Slip on sneakers are a heaven sent for simple, yet chic run-out-the door footwear. Tying shoes can take up a lot of your time if you add it up over a year! Obviously white is a big trend not only in my own wardrobe, but in the general fashion world as well right now. By mixing the crisp nature of white leather with the laid back feeling of a sneaker, your outfit instantly becomes “cool” yet stylishly appropriate for most environments. Almost everyone of my clients own slip on sneakers because they can go from a playdate to the park to dinner to brunch to climbing Mount Everest. Ok, maybe not the last example.

A running sneaker is usually made for just that, running, but this bad boy is for strutting your stuff all over town! This pair by Karl Lagerfeld combines black suede and sparkly sides for extra oomph. They are legitimately created in the likeness of my gym sneakers which makes me smile from ear to ear when I am scaling the many floors of Saks 5th avenue for upwards of 5 hours. I used to come home during my ballet flat days practically in tears and limping, the switch to stylish sneakers was a no-brainer for me. I technically had NO choice unless I wanted to shoot botox into the bottom of my feet to alleviate the pain (this is a real thing people).  Running shoes with stylish 5th avenue worthy ensembles? Yes please.

sporty chic collage

The above sporty chic look is the most simple way of pulling off the sneaker trend no matter what your age, style or budget. It is essentially an upgraded t-shirt and jeans ensemble, who doesn’t love the basics done right??? Obviously the most important element is choosing the right kicks, if a hightop is too crazy for you go for a slip or slide on just like the ones shown paired with the jeans. A great waist length jacket and messenger bag will not only be stylish, but both will compliment the easy going feel you are most definitely going for. Top the look off with a dope pair of sunnies (aviators are my go-to for sporty chic) and you are ready to conquer the world in a seriously comfortable outfit!

black tote, boyfriend jeans, cargo jacket, aviators, high tops
