Favorite Designer: Tamara Mellon

People are always asking me about my favorite designers. I have so many that I love, from shoes, to bags, to coats, to well, everything! To spread the good fashion word, I’m doing a 5 part series on my top 5 favorite designers right now. First up, shoes…..

I’m obsessed with Tamara Mellon shoes. She was the co-founder of Jimmy Choo so she definitely knows her stuff when it comes to style. There are two things I LOVE about her new namesake shoe line. First, Mellon understands that simple design combined with interesting details are the bomb. Her shoes are incredibly wearable AND stylish. Secondly, the price point is right for the amazing quality. For example, designer heels are usually around $700. Mellon’s heels are a cool $350, totally worth it!

Dare I say these are the perfect black flats? They are dope. Basic yet edgy, perfect for any scenario from work to a sexy date shoe that ISN’T a heel. I’m obsessed with all things clear, it adds that perfect punch to all footwear.

Cool, comfortable and stylish? Um, yes please. Moccasins and sneakers seem to have had the perfect shoe baby. Weekend style has never looked so good. Pair them with skinny jeans and an oversized sweater to look casually cool as hell….

Army boots are the jam. These are not for the faint of heart, you are definitely showing off your bad ass side when you throw these on. Be the bad ass, I believe in you.

A sexy nude heel is a must in any ladies wardrobe. This may actually be the most perfect I have ever found. Why you ask? First, the heel is realistic and STILL sexy. Hallelujah. Second, the nude color is a great shade for many caucasian skin tones. And third, the clear part is an awesome detail people! Did I mention I love clear in any and all shoes???

Leopard is in with a vengeance, this trend is roaring right now. Yup, I said that. This heel is classic, sexy, fun, trendy, interesting….. It is EVERYTHING.

A classic black ankle bootie is a necessity in every ladies shoe collection. This one works because it is elegant and classic with a sexy twist. The back zipper adds sass and the low profile that dips down in the front of the ankle allows them to be styled with everything. From skirts, to dresses, to ankle pants, to skinny jeans, this baby is your new go-to.

Finally, your classic knee high black heeled boot done right. Heel, chunky but not too chunky. Toe, pointy but not too pointy. Leather, shiny but not too shiny. Perfect.

Amy’s Ultimate Styling Tips: Part 2

What’s that you say??? You are ready for round 2 of my ULTIMATE STYLING TIPS? Not to worry, I’m here to save the fashion day. I’m passing on some of my most coveted styling tricks so every gal, far and wide, can have the stylish confidence they deserve.

1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OUTFIT YOU HAVE EVER WORN?

This Alice and Olivia dress was my Carrie Bradshaw moment!  What grown woman doesn’t dream of wearing a tutu as an actual outfit?? I wore this on the red carpet for Million Dollar Shoppers. I pulled this look together literally 3 hours before the event! Every girl needs a totally over the top moment! Say yes to something that seems just a little too crazy for you…..

2. WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF FASHION ADVICE YOU LIVE BY?

Don’t emergency shop, you end up with things that you don’t love and spend too much.

STATEMENTS TO AVOID!

I love it except it doesn’t quite fit right!

The shirt is so cute, but I’ve never loved the color.

It was on sale so I bought it because it was a good price.

Make a shopping list by going through your current seasonal wardrobe before even thinking of actually shopping. It may be slightly more tedious, but you WILL save time and money by buying what you actually need. Stop wasting money and filing your closet with things you don’t LOVE.

3. HOW DO YOU SHOP FOR YOURSELF VS. YOUR CLIENTS?

For my clients we stick to a very specific shopping list & typically go to merchandised department stores because everything is under one roof. It is efficient because they have most sizes and LOTS of styles.

The world is my oyster when it comes to shopping for myself. From boutiques, to flea markets all over the world, to designer discount, to department stores…. Basically everywhere.  I have one ongoing shopping list with long-standing pieces I am searching for and one small seasonal list just as I create for my clients based on current holes in my wardrobe. And of course,  if I find something I love I just buy it!

4. WHOSE STYLE DO YOU LOVE?

Jennifer Lopez, because she thinks of every detail. The hair, nails, makeup, perfect accessories, she doesn’t miss a beat. Don’t just buy a great cocktail dress and then throw your tote bag on with it. Remember, it is all a look, every piece matters!

5. WHAT ACCESSORY DOES EVERY GIRL NEED?

The perfect everyday bag. Think about the function this bag serves before thinking about style. What do you carry everyday? Do you like to be hands-free and not actually holding the bag? Do you like compartments in your bag? Once you have determined the reality of your life, then pick your perfect style!  Spend money on this, it is a cost per wear item. You will be wearing it everyday. It is the cherry on top of the sundae of your look!!!

Amy’s Ultimate Styling Tips: Part 1

It’s time to stop being selfish and share all of my deep, dark styling secrets. I enlisted my assistant Sara to play fashion reporter to gather all of this incredibly important information. Here goes……From my brain to your closet, here goes a 2 part series of MY ULTIMATE STYLING TIPS!!!

1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FASHION QUOTE?

I always look to Coco. You never want to look overdone, you go from great to tacky in an instant.

2. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS?

I LOVE J Brand skinny, high waist skinny jeans. They come in 2 styles, the Alana style for petite women (no hemming!) and the Maria style for ladies over 5’3″. They feel like leggings. Warning: They stretch A LOT so buy a size smaller then you think you should. I swear, they will be falling off of you otherwise. You will thank me later.

Alana, for the petite ladies under 5’3″

Maria, for those who were blessed with height over 5’3″

Chiara Boni La Petite Robe is the most perfect LBD (little black dress). Their dresses are basically created like a body shaper undergarment so they hold everything in! They are also timeless so you will have it for years. It is a pain in the ass to get on, but totally worth it.

Stuart Weitzman is one of my favorite shoe designers. They are great quality for the price point and always have a range of styles from classic to funky. My favorite high heel of all time is the Nudist style! They come in tons of colors and 3 different heel heights. The ultimate option for styling potential is the nude color, heel height choice is based on your pain threshold. Legs for days…..

Etsy.com is my go to place to shop from local artisans and support small jewelry designers. I find the best pieces at the best prices while supporting other fellow entrepreneurs!

Veronica Beard does the best blazers in town. They are perfectly fitted and a great wardrobe staple no matter what your day to day looks like. They immediately bring some sass to any look! Fun fact: They are sister-in-laws both named Veronica who decided to build a fashion empire together.

3. WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT?

For fall I go for high waisted jeans, a body suit and layer on one of my many leather bombers. I choose accessories and shoes based on how my day looks. Simple, chic and easy is the best way to go no matter who your audience is.

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FASHION TREND?

Sneakers for everything! I believe function and fashion should be best friends. I truly love a high top because it will work from fall all the way until early spring.

5. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE FASHION TREND?

Being uncomfortable! Your confidence level will plummet if you can’t breathe or your feet are killing you. Feeling good is your ultimate accessory, you can be stylish without having to suffer.

Shopping at the Source: Colombia

I love shopping. I love traveling. What happens when you mix the two together? Magic.

Going straight to the source for great wardrobe additions that are one of a kind is certainly a luxury. I take extreme pride in choosing beautiful, handmade, locally-sourced items that make incredible conversation pieces. Not only does this make your look original, but it also includes a fabulous story to share about your beautiful find.

Colombia was filled with unbelievable, gorgeous pieces at incredible prices. This mochila bag above is hand woven and completely original. I searched for days through hundreds of options because I wanted to pick the perfect one. Yes, this takes patience, but it is a treasure hunt filled with overwhelming joy. It only made it sweeter when I got back and saw a similar bag at Bergdorf’s for $1350. Mine was under $100…..

No matter where you are shopping, at home or abroad, look for unique, interesting jewelry that showcases your personality. It is your chance to throw caution to the wind and just buy things that you LOVE.  I found this fabulous pair of statement earrings in a little boutique. Sure, they were more expensive than the street vendors, but I absolutely LOVE them and that’s what really matters.

Shopping abroad should feel like the most amazing treasure hunt ever. The whole idea is that you are having fun looking for cool, locally made items. Yes, I just said FUN. If you aren’t having fun then you aren’t doing it right! Colombia was filled with beautiful, hand-made straw bags which are very in style right now. I was lucky enough to go straight to the source to find my perfect summer bag.

When I’m shopping abroad one of the most important factors to me is knowing what each country specifically produces. I’m looking to buy from the person making it! Colombia is known for their absolutely beautiful alpaca scarves so obviously I was going to get one. My client’s rave about how much they love this oversized pink scarf, little do they know it was under $50…. Amazing quality and a great price? Now I just need to decide where I’m flying to next….

My Guide to Packing: The Big 4-0 Edition

Happy birthday to me. That’s right, I turned 40 this year. And in honor of nothing other than being alive, 17 people joined me in the Dominican Republic for a 4 day extravaganza. Aside from planning every waking moment, I had to put together an epic and fitting 40th birthday look book.

The key to creating this birthday look book was to re-style and photograph what I already had. Aside from my actual birthday party look, I was ONLY pulling from what I already owned. Economical and stylish.

Shout out to all of my friends and family that flew all the way to the Dominican Republic. It helps that my birthday is in January so everyone is looking to get the hell out of dodge. I was brought up right, so thanking my guests with a little, stylish gift was a must. I found these straw clutches on Etsy.com. Straw is my favorite trend right now, share the love!

The most important trick to packing right is to style full looks BEFORE you get there. This way you do not overpack. You need to create a (mostly) detailed itinerary of what you will be doing so you create appropriate outfits. I pulled out everything I might want to bring and then put together fully styled ensembles, accessories and all. From the bedroom floor to the beach!!!

We spent most of our time lounging around our fabulous, eco-friendly resort, so beach looks were important. I’m not one to just “throw on a bathing suit”, so completely styled sand/water-friendly outfits are necessary. I know you are shocked. From your cover-up to your hat, put your back into it. Looking fabulous all the time (especially when you are the center of attention) is a not an option.

I knew we would spend 2 of our evenings at the VERY laid back resort, so the option to throw on whatever was definitely there. But why would I do that? I choose to be comfortable AND fabulous all the time. It takes only minimally more effort, I swear. I always say that the difference between “just clothing” and an outfit is adding great accessories…..

We had one big night out so being over the top fabulous was in order. It is MY birthday after all! I picked up this 2 piece see-through gold cover up in Greece and definitely never thought I would wear it as an outfit ever again after that trip. I was wrong. I put my bronze bikini underneath (the look was see-through as I mentioned) and went to town, literally. It was a great moment when all of my friends were in awe of this crazy ensemble. Mission completed.

The final night of my big, 40th birthday trip was a dinner and beach bonfire hosted by moi at the resort. I wanted something ethereal. I called the look, “island born again chic”. I designed the entire look around a flower crown that I ordered from the resort. My mistake of not explaining what exactly I wanted the crown to look like became clear when a “drink the Kool-aid floral head piece” was handed to me. After my slight meltdown, my wonderful boyfriend brought back a huge pink flower to top off my look. Crisis averted. Best. Birthday. Ever.
