Work from Home Waist Up Style

This week on #CommunityClosetChallenge I chatted with Farnoosh Torabi, a working mom and host of the “So Money” podcast. Farnoosh asked me about finding the best shopping deals and how to look chic from the waist up while working via video chat. Does it take half the time to get ready if you’re only focusing on half your body? Hell yes. Who said working from home wasn’t kind of awesome?

WHAT’S THE BEST WAIST-UP WORK STYLE FOR VIDEO CHAT?

Chic and simple is the name of the game. Remember ladies, we are ALL working from home so getting too done up will just flat out look ridiculous. Plus, who wants put in all that effort? Take a cue from your audience. How does your boss look? What about your fellow co-workers? Don’t have the answers, don’t worry. I will have you ready in 10 minutes, just scroll down to my top 5 tips below to get waist up work fabulous in a jiffy.

IS IT THE RIGHT TIME FOR SALE SHOPPING?

I know this is not our biggest concern right now, but it is DEFINITELY worth chatting about. There are crazy sales happening, it helps you, the economy and your fellow human to swoop up these deals. Think long term. In these uncertain times we don’t know what we will be doing tomorrow. Go for foundation items, things you KNOW you will need no matter what. Choose big ticket items that on are super sale. Get it girl.

WHAT SHOULD I BUY NOW?

Simple answer, things you absolutely love. Your closet should bring you joy and thrill you every time you open the door. This should be how you operate ALL the time, but now is a good time to start practicing this habit. Most people have too much stuff. Right now we are being forced to analyze all of that “stuff”. Great! Start building a wardrobe that sings to you, that makes you feel alive when you wear it. It is always the right time to start a new habit. Especially one that saves you time, money and wardrobe heart ache!

College Grad to Workplace Style

I had so much fun this week on #CommunityClosetChallenge! My guest Arianna, a 20-something recent college graduate on the job hunt asked me how to transition her college wardrobe to a successful career look. She is looking for a job located in NYC in public relations specializing in fashion. This means there is LOTS of wiggle room and very few “interview look” rules. How does she know what is TOO far? She asks me obviously:)

“I NEED A CREATIVE INTERVIEW LOOK THAT GETS ME THE JOB!”

“Dress for the job you want.” Live by this mantra, especially when picking out your outfit for the interview! Learn about the company culture, the environment and specifically the person interviewing you. Impress them. Create a confident and bad ass, “remember me I’m awesome, smart, sassy and ultimately the RIGHT person for this job” look. Arianna’s cute black and white polka dot dress , black blazer and a black pump are the perfect pick when interviewing for a fashion public relations house in NYC.

“I LOVE MY BLACK BLAZER, HOW CAN I WEAR IT MORE?”

This is going to be a solid piece in your wardrobe that can “business-ify” any outfit. What do I mean exactly? Take any dressy casual look, throw on your black blazer and boom! You are ready for a creative work environment. Make sure it is well-fitted, higher quality and tailored to perfection. This is a foundation item so you will be wearing it a lot.

“CAN I RESTYLE MY OVERSIZED BLAZER FOR WORK?”

Hell yes. Ever wonder how those effortlessly styled women look so effortless? An easy way is by topping off any outfit with an oversized blazer. Seriously, it’s that easy. Go from casual to business appropriate by pairing it with a black ankle pant and a simple white shell. Let your awesome oversized blazer have it’s shining moment by making it the center of the style show!

Athleisure Chic: Look cute AND comfy

Ready for more #CommunityClosetChallenge??? My guest Elia, a 30-something personal chef from NYC, asked me about the best picks for athleisure chic. There is no other style more important right now than comfy fabulousness. We may be stuck at home, but I refuse to give in to dirty pajamas everyday. Be cute for yourself, it is the most important way of staying sane. Dress up for you, doctors orders!

“ARE JEAN JACKETS STILL COOL?”

Always. Whether you are an athleisure junkie or just dipping your toe in the pond, this is your perfect layering piece. You should have multiple colors (and styles if you get really into it). This is the perfect topper to any look if you want to look cool and casual.

“HELP! MY LOOK HAS BECOME LIKE A UNIFORM.”

You are not alone. It’s tough to change up your look everyday, but there is hope! The key to switching it up without re-inventing the wheel is jewelry and shoes. Having a simple base outfit (or uniform), but changing out your “flare” everyday is the answer. Learn what silhouettes and designers are best for you first so your “uniform” fits well and flatters your figure. Then all you have to worry about is your fun factor!

“NO SHOW SOCKS ARE MY NEMESIS!”

Girl, the world hears you. Digging into the back of your shoe to lift up your no-show sock might be the most annoying thing in the world. And, if athleisure is your thing, no-show socks are essential to this sneaker-bound style. My favorite brands are Bombas and the Gap. Designers have yet to create the perfect pair, but these come close.

Petite Picks: Small Package Style Tips

Hello ladies (and gentleman). We are in full swing of a “new normal” and with that, I created #CommunityClosetChallenge. Every Wednesday at 5p I’m dishing my best style tips to a different Instagram giveaway winner for 30 minutes. This means you have direct access to all things “Amy” if you go to @SassnStyle on Insta and tag a friend in my giveaway post once a week. Don’t want to be on camera? Don’t worry. These style tidbits are for all no matter your body type, budget or lifestyle.

My guest Nadia, a 30 something business executive from Boston, asked me about the best picks for her petite frame. Below are my top 3 tips to help her feel fabulous both during and beyond quarantine!

“HELP! I’M 5 FEET TALL AND ITS SO HARD TO SHOP.”

I’m here to save the (petite) fashion day! I get it, the shopping world is not very helpful when you are below 5’2″. You have 2 things working in your favor. Number 1, tailors are plentiful and you are going to find a good one. Consider this part of the cost of an item. You WILL need to alter things and that’s OK. Lot’s of body types require additional tweaks, it’s not just you! Number 2, you are in luck because stores are full of cropped things these days. Shorter sleeves, shorter pants, shorter dresses…. This means these items will fit you perfectly with NO tailoring. Yay!

“I HATE HIGH HEELS!!!”

Me too! I believe they were invented by the devil. Not to worry, there are 2 other options that will give you a lift without killing your feet. Option 1 is a chunk heel. Yes, it is a heel, but it is VERY comfortable because you aren’t walking around on something the size of a toothpick. Option 2 is a skinny wedge. This gives the effect of a heel without the pain of a heel. It is also great for outdoor events so you don’t sink into the grass!!!

“I WANT TO LOOK CUTE ALL THE TIME.”

You are in luck because it is not only possible, it is easy to accomplish. How to you do this you ask? Simply don’t buy anything that you don’t love. You should never utter the words, “Oh, this is good enough.” Not even when thinking about what to wear to the grocery store. I am not suggesting that you put on a gown to buy green beans, I’m just suggesting that even your comfy clothing can be awesome. I stand by the rule that only your at-home, no one will ever see this look should be the moment when you give up on life. That is the time to pull out your hole-y, stained t-shirt that you just can’t get rid of….

Top 5 Tips To Clean Out Your Closet

TOP TIP #1:

SEPARATE SEASONS

Out of sight, out of mind. You should do this twice a year, when it is getting warmer out and when it is getting colder out. Or each season, depending on how much you own. Pack things away in plastic bins or put them in the back of your closet. You do not need your wool sweaters when it is 80 degrees out. If you ONLY keep items you are wearing visible, the easier you will make your life. You won’t need to dig to find what you are looking for.

TOP TIP #2:

ORGANIZE BY CATEGORY

Put all your similar items together. Skirts go with skirts, pants with pants, you get the idea! Below are the typical categories I put together so you can always find what you are looking for. If all your pants are together then you can always find any pair of pants at any time! Crazy concept!
  • Pants
  • Shorts
  • Jeans
  • Blouses/T-Shirts
  • Blazers
  • Sweaters
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Beach Stuff
  • Formal Wear
  • Workout Wear
  • Comfy Clothes/PJ’s
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Bags
  • Coats/ Scarves/ Gloves/ Hats

TOP TIP #3:

ORGANIZE WITHIN EACH CATEGORY

It’s time to NEVER lose anything in your closet again. If you know where everything is, then you will always know where to find it. For tops, sleeveless tops go together, short sleeves go together, followed by long sleeved tops together. The second step WITHIN tops is to put like materials together. Cotton with cotton, silky with silky, etc. Now take it even further, within JUST the tops, organize by color. First white, then black, next solid colors and finally patterns together. The goal is to see similarities within each category and put those things together. Focus on silhouettes, materials and colors. You can decide on your own sub-categories based on what you own. Everyone’s closet is different and that is a good thing!

TOP TIP #4:
DONATE
This is your moment to FINALLY get rid of things. ONLY go through your spring/summer stuff. Doing it all at once is too overwhelming. Create 3 piles: Donate, try on and tailor.
  • Donate: Things you know need to go ASAP. Just toss it!
  • Try-on: Things you aren’t sure about, try it on and then decide.
  • Tailor: Things you might be able to save through tailoring. Refer to #5.
Most people wear about 20% of what they own MEANING they are fighting through 80% of things that they don’t love, don’t fit and they will never wear again. ASK YOURSELF:
  • When is the last time I actually wore this?
  • Do I LOVE everything about this? If you love the color, but hate the way it fits, the answer is NO.
  • Be hard on your closet. Getting rid of things that don’t make you happy WILL make you happy.
  • If you aren’t sure, ask your best friend. They will be honest with you.
  • If you really aren’t sure, keep it one more season. If you don’t wear it, say goodbye. For real this time!
  • Invite your friends over to dig through your treasures (they bring the wine!). Consign to ThreadUp.com. Or, for more expensive pieces, consign them at TheRealReal.com.

TOP TIP #5:
TAILOR
A great tailor can be your best friend. Your wardrobe often has potential to become what you want by just a tweak here and there. Change the buttons on your favorite blazer to update it immediately. Shorten your favorite skirt to flatter your figure even more. Let out the chest in that gorgeous blouse you USED to love and give the girls a chance to breathe. Only focus on items that are good quality and look expensive. You don’t need to tailor your dress from the GAP circa 1995!
